This lotion is 100% natural and contains spa-type ingredients like seaweed extracts and green algae.  No worries, it is light, non-sticky and has little to no fragrance.

The claim on the bottle is that in 2 weeks, you skin will be visibly firmer, smoother and more toned.

Make the effort to look finished to look younger.

The difference between a younger woman and an older one?  A guy told me recently that a younger woman with long shiny straight hair probably takes a lot of time and effort to style her hair, while an older woman probably has "better thing things to do."  You may feel you are too busy to look finished but if you want to look youthful, you need to figure out how to get the look on your schedule.

By the way, this includes dressing.  Younger women are more likely to fuss over shoes and jewelry and add wardrobe touches like boots, tights and stylish purses.

FINALLY, something that helps with those little wrinkles around the mouth!

Alexis Vogel, queen of the make-up infomercial, has created an amazing product.  It smoothes your skin and fills in tiny wrinkles and is an SPF 30 sunscreen at the same time!

The product is called: Retexturizing Face Primer by AVC.

Chanel Lift Intensive, the best foundation- lifts, firms, but not too shiny

Go to Chanel for samples of the best anti- aging foundation.  It lifts and evens your skin for a ten-years younger look, day or night.  AMAZING.

The secret to making skin care and makeup samples last is to use a PIN to prick a pin-sized hole in the corner, compliments of the lovely women at Chanel.

Instant Eye Lift.

For an instant eye lift, angle your brows and  eyeliner upward.

For brows, make sure the outside 1/3 goes upward, not downward.  Also, make sure you have enough of an arch, even if your brows are rounded.

For eyeliner, make sure the outside 1/3 on the top lash line angles upward and/ or gets thicker.  The thickening trick, a favorite of makeup artist Mally, works beautifully.  It should be subtle, so it creates an optical illusion.

Chanel, still the best.

Run to the Chanel counter for a foundation update and the gorgeous smokey eye palette!

The color product of the season is a four-pan eyeshadow palette called the Smokey Eye.  All four shadow shades are sheer with a subtle sparkle.  The white, black, silver and silver/gray shadows combine like magic, creating a beautfully- muted smokey eye that is actually easy to do!  Let Chanel artists show you how.

Chanel now has pre-sealed samples of their top of the line Lumiere lifting foundations by shade. It's a great idea and a beautiful foundation that really does lift and tighten while adding a luminous, but not too shiny glow.

What the Japanese do better- skin care secrets

A recent article about the lack of wrinkles on Japanese women's faces attributed this to diet and skin care.

Diet includes soy, rice and green tea.  All contribute to good skin.

Skin care regimens include more steps than in America:
  1. Cleansing with mild cleansers
  2. Softening (toning)
  3. Serum
  4. Moisturizer
  5. Sunscreen

Don't wear a watch

Watches are fashion accessories, but only if you are over 40 or they are clearly fashion-oriented, like last season's big white/rhinestone styles.  Tech savvy women of all ages use their cell phones to tell time, instead of a tailored-style watch.

Guerlain Parure Foundation and Orchidee Cream- for eyes and lips

Go to the Guerlain counter and try the Parure Foundation with 24K gold.  Sounds like a gimmick but it makes your skin glow.  Very pretty and youthful.

Also, try the Orchidee lip and eye cream to address two areas where fine lines show up and intensify annoyingly.  One cream works for both. It's expensive but a third (or less) of one session of painful shots at the derm doctor.

Allure Magazine

Allure's a great magazine for keeping up with the trends, but not being overtaken by them.  The tutorials in each issue- how to put on bronzer, how to do a smokey eye, etc- printed on keepsake cards are worth the subscription price, about $10.

Eyeliner on top only

Top tip- Use eyeliner on top of lid ONLY.  If you do use liner on bottom, use a lighter color to avoid closing in the eye.

For a makeover in a bottle, try YSL Teint Majeur foundation for $100.

If you love romantic, feminine fragrances, pick Chloe in the pretty bottle with a sterling silver top. It makes you... happy!

Makeover in a bottle- YSL foundation

Yves Saint Laurent Teint Majeur Foundation is amazing.  It is creamy yet not oily.  It covers yet does not cling. Even with combination skin, it never gets greasy....  When I tested it, I was stunned at the difference...in the mirror was a new, much younger face!

Here's the link for this non-surgical miracle worker at Saks Fifth Avenue.  You can see the shades here, but you'll need to go to Saks or Bloomies to find the right one.

Try OOKISA

Want thicker hair? Try the free sample of OOKISA available everywhere on the web.  It's a 3-part system- shampoo, conditioner, scalp serum- that really works.  The bad news is the cost @ approx. $80.  The good news is that you can use the trial supply, while you make up your mind...  Note, don't pay the regular outbound shipping cost, they will negotiate that down to half or nothing, so if you do return it, the final cost is just the return shipping of near-empty bottles.

Finally sunscreen that won't gross you out

The number one source of aging is photo aging, or exposure to sun.

We don't use enough sunblock to effectively block the sun, according to recent books by derm doctors. The #1 reason- the stuff was nasty. Well, that is finally changing. Plus other beneficial ingredients are being added to amp up the protection.

Here are the latest sunscreen winners and their best uses:

1. Under make-up/ normal to dry skin: Neutrogena Ageless Restoratives
This creamy lotion provides "skin renewal moisture" with SPF 30 from helioplex (the latest non-allergenic sunscreen that avoids the stinging etc that came with PABA) plus antioxidants which the latest research lauds for sun protection. Feels like an expensive cream from France. Best of all, this one smells good, citrusy!  (Make sure you get the right one, Neutrogena has a lot of variations, not all have helioplex or antioxidants.)

2.  Under make-up/ normal to oily or combination:  La Roche Posay Anthelios 60
This is what those in the know (and with enough $) use in Europe. Thin, almost liquid, no scent, great under makeup. Easily absorbed. Now available in US, but pricey. A 1.7 fl oz bottle is $30 at CVS.

3. Arms and chest: Aveeno Continous Protection Sunblock Lotion
Perfect to use before a commute or an outdoor workout on arms, hands and legs. Oil-free, non-greasy, dry feeling.

Tweezerman Eyelash Curler

The best eyelash curler is not the Shu Uemura one that the beauty mags push, but one made by Tweezerman, famous for top quality implements, especially tweezers.  I got mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Don't waste your money on those in the drugstore.  They will disappoint.

Smashbox Lash DNA

Received a sample of Smashbox Lash DNA from ULTA.  It has a funky spiral brush that works!  Makes your lashes behave and look thick, dark and separated.  Finally a mascara that delivers.

Don't let your hair be FLAT

Today, I had a picture taken in a restaurant with my 70 year mother.  I had just fluffed up her curly blonde hair with Ouidad products at Sephora; and it looked great.  I'm 20+ years younger, but my likeness was captured with flat hair and pale make-up.  Bottom line,  I looked monotone... and she looked great.

It is not about age, it is about effort!  Please take the effort to put VOLUME in your hair and create contrast in your eye make-up. It really makes a difference!

ps- Here's a great reader comment:
The secret to using the Ouidad line.
Comb SHAMPOO & conditioner through hair with a wide tooth comb. Rinse WELL. Use spray sparingly.

Drugstore creams with clinical studies...2 that work!

Two anti-aging creams that work are
  • L'Oreal Revitalift Deep Set Wrinkle Repair
  • ROC Multi-Correxion Eye Treatment
Each has clinical studies and my anecdotal evidence to back them up.
The L'Oreal Revitalift on sale is about $15 (Walgreen's, CVS).  At that price you can use it on your chest and arms/hands like the rich women do...  I have seen big improvements in those sun-damaged areas.  It's not a luxurious Dior-type cream (no perfume), but it works.
The ROC eye cream seems to be erasing the fine wrinkles at the outside corners of my eyes...  It also seems  to be diminishing dark circles.  It is very silky, like an expensive eye cream.

HD Foundation

My sister, Vivienne, loves Makeup Forever HD Foundation from Sephora. It really does make skin look flawless.  There are about 20 shades, but somehow, I couldn't find a good one, so I ended up with cream to powder foundation from Smashbox at ULTA.

The Smashbox HD cream foundation comes in a very nice compact that goes in my purse for mess-free touchups.  I find that I hardly need to touch it up... The coverage is a bit heavier than the MF HD.  I use it on my chest and cheeks to cover freckles.  It works!

I have been trying primers, but none of them seem to make much difference... comments?

So many mascaras, so little time

Looking for input on all the new drugstore mascaras.  Any winners out there?

The drugstore concealer that thinks it is a luxury brand

The little pot of concealer that thinks it is a luxury brand- Neutrogena mineral sheers concealer- is available at CVS and Walgreen's for about $7.00.  If you use the oft-available buy one, get one (BOGO) offers on Neutrogena cosmetics, it's an even better buy.

The pot has concealer on the top and mineral powder on the bottom.  It's the concealer that is so special- It's creamy (no settling in creases) and self-highlighting.  How that works, I don't know but when you use it the area around your eyes looks like you used a concealer and a highlighter (and that's without using the powder).

The powder is a very sheer setting powder.  I don't always use it.
